This Sunday is Easter, so I’ve decided to dedicate this post to one of my favorite holidays (yes, I know- all of them are my favorite). Besides being the most important Christian Holiday, Easter is a celebration of Spring on a National level. In fact, one of the biggest Easter celebrations takes place right at the White House.

Every Easter Monday, the White House hosts the Easter Egg Roll- one of our nation’s longest standing traditions. Egg rolling originally began around Washington DC in the 19th century (with a lot of push-back from the groundskeepers) but it wasn’t until 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes invited kids to the White House lawn that it became a tradition. Since then, year after year (save for the World Wars) our nation has watched these kids donning Easter bonnets and racing their eggs along the grass.

The Egg Roll of today has evolved into quite the event, with live bands, dressed up characters, endorsements and sponsorships. But I love the simplicity of these images from years past. I mean… SO CUTE!!!
