Beautiful Life and Style

Artwork by: Laurel Sparks (pt 2)

Last night Nick and I were lucky enough to attend a meet and greet with one of my favorite contemporary artists, Laurel Sparks, at Child’s Gallery on Newbury St. The event was hosted by the MFA Summer Party, a benefit gala in Boston that is always a great party to kick off the summer season!

I was excited to learn that after a year in Italy, Laurel has gone in a completely new direction with her art. The result is a much more geometric, layered look. The piece that we received is entitled “Solid Gold” aptly named after the Summer Party theme. Instead of her typical addition of sparkle with rhinestones and glitter, the artist layered levels of gold-leaf to create an amazingly complex piece. It GLOWS. I’m really excited to frame it and hang it in our place!

Laurel Sparks has a completely new website featuring her new style of work. I think you will agree that while it is a new direction it still stays true to her original style that I love. I recommend you head over and check it out! Here are a few of my new favorites:

Children’s Books: not just for children

Every week, for the past four years I have made the trek from my office to the public school down the street to meet with the same little girl and read her stories while she enjoys her lunch. The program is something my office sponsors through the Everybody Wins, Metro Boston Powerlunch Program, a national nonprofit that supports children’s literacy and mentorship. Today was the last day, and I have to say I’m pretty sad, yet proud, that my kid is graduating to a new school.

When we met, my partner was five years old, in 1st grade and was barely reading “See Spot Run” But by the end of this year, she is 4th grade, 10 years old, probably a foot taller, and we were finishing a beautifully illustrated version of Wind and the Willows…. with enthusiasm!

The commitment has literally been a half hour each week x 30 weeks x 4 years.. it comes out to about 60 hours, but in those 60 hours I have not only read countless numbers of picture books, but I have also made a great friend and I like to think I have helped her to always love and appreciate a good story. It was also a fun experience for me, a weekly trip down memory lane into the lives of some of my favorite long lost friends.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid were when my parents read to me. I can still hear my dad saying “the Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the BIG HUNGRY BEAR” and my mom reading “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” so many times she knew it by heart.

And I think its fair to say that the art of children’s book illustrations are far underrated. Books provide kids with their earliest exposure to art of all sorts of different mediums.

I know this post is quite off topic for me, but I guess what I’m trying to say is READ to your kids. I don’t have kids, but I am certain that some of my readers do- and I have to imagine that most people here at least KNOW a kid who would benefit from having someone to read with. Wherever, whenever, there is no better bonding experience, no better gift you can give than reading aloud and enjoying a story. And definitely check out Powerlunch if you are looking for a way to give back to your own community- they are all over the country!

This post is scattered with some of my favorite stories. What stories were your favorite to read a loud as a child?

Easy Entertaining: Melon and Prosciutto

Happy Friday! In honor of Memorial Day and the unofficial start to summer I wanted to feature one of my favorite snacks inspired by luncheons at outdoor cafes in Italy. Melon and Proscuitto is such a simple salty sweet combination, if you haven’t tried it before- prepared to be amazed with how fast this platter will disappear! Good thing its easy to create in under 15 minutes!

Melon and Prosciutto Plate

  • Cantaloupe
  • Thinly Sliced Prosciutto
  • Breadsticks

Slice up your cantaloupe, you can buy pre-cut melon to save time- but I recommend taking the extra effort- its not only cheaper but definitely more juicy! (as a side story- today I asked the grocer at WF which looked the ripest and we ended up cutting into a few together to see which ones were the best! Talk about a free sample!)

Now take a large platter and creatively arrange your cantaloupe. I did semi-sunbursts but you could do a giant mound or even use a melon baller and create little rounds. Next take the single slices of prosciutto and add them to the plate. I served with bread-sticks, you can even get fancy and wrap the prosciutto around the bread-sticks and make lollypops.

Was that not the easiest recipe yet?! I hope you invite some friends over this weekend for apps and drinks!

Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is an event that began in 2008 and has grown to be one of the most highly anticipated and star studded events on the summer social calendar. And its no wonder, I mean, who WOULDN’T want to dress up, sip champagne and watch some Ralph Lauren Models play a polo match..

If you are like me and just dying to attend the sold out event you now have a chance to snag two free tickets! Currently Bergdorf Goodman is running a contest on facebook. The rules are simple: create an awesome outfit on polyvore using the fashions of designer Wes Gordon and a curated set of accessories. These are a few of the sets that I made. Just remember… if you win and find yourself with that +1… don’t forget who told you about the contest!

Garden Sheds. Or how my flowers aren’t pretty if they are surrounded by a mess.

I went out to water my flower boxes this morning and my balcony looked like this:

Not exactly the urban oasis I’ve been hoping for. Lets just say its a work in progress. But, as you could have guessed by my lack of posting- I’ve barely had time to do my laundry lately, let alone finish my gardening. What I really wish I had room for is a beautiful garden shed to hide all of these empty planters, dirty gardening gloves and tools in while I wait to finish my outdoor projects.. Something a little like these:

I especially love the idea of having a lounging area inside the shed as well. I mean… if we’re spending our imaginary days in the sun, gardening- it might work to sleep out there too: (ps this is actually the same “shed” as the one above- talk about amazing right!?)

But even just an extra sink in the house with beautiful open shelves would make me happy:

A girl can dream right?
